Frequently Asked Questions

What this word counter does

This is a simple, browser-based word counter that gives you live counts as you type or paste text. It reports words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, and an estimated reading time. The numbers update on every keystroke so you can keep editing without re-running anything.

It is meant to be a lightweight everyday utility for writers, students, bloggers, marketers, and anyone who needs to check the length of a piece of text before publishing or submitting it. There is no signup, no upload step, and nothing to install.

How to use the tool

  1. Click into the editor on this page.
  2. Paste your draft, essay, caption, or article into the box.
  3. Read the counts in the summary area above the editor.
  4. Edit your text until it fits the length you want. The counts update automatically.

You can also type directly into the editor and watch the numbers go up. There is no separate "count" button to press.

Who this is useful for

  • Bloggers and writers who want their posts to stay within a target length range.
  • Students writing assignments and essays with a minimum or maximum word count.
  • Social media creators who need to fit captions inside platform character limits.
  • Job seekers trimming resumes, cover letters, and LinkedIn About sections to a tight length.
  • Marketers writing ad copy, product descriptions, and email subject lines that need to fit fixed limits.
  • Developers and content teams drafting documentation, READMEs, or release notes.

Common length targets to keep in mind

These are rough, widely used guidelines rather than strict rules. Use them as a starting point.

  • Meta description: roughly 150 to 160 characters so it is not cut off in search results.
  • SEO title tag: roughly 50 to 60 characters.
  • Tweet / X post: 280 characters maximum.
  • Instagram caption: up to 2,200 characters, but the first 125 are what readers usually see before tapping "more".
  • LinkedIn post: up to 3,000 characters; shorter posts tend to perform better.
  • Resume bullet: 1 to 2 lines, usually under 200 characters per bullet.
  • Blog post: in-depth articles often land between 1,200 and 2,500 words, although shorter posts are fine for focused topics.

How reading time is estimated

Reading time is calculated using an average silent reading speed of about 200 to 250 words per minute. That number is an industry average rather than something that fits every reader. People skim differently, technical writing slows readers down, and shorter sentences tend to read faster.

Treat the reading-time number as an editorial guide, not a precise measurement. It is useful for telling readers roughly how long an article will take or for deciding whether a post is too long for its topic.

Tips for an accurate count

  • Paste plain text instead of formatted content when possible. Hidden characters from some editors can affect counts.
  • Make sure paragraphs are separated by blank lines if you want the paragraph counter to be accurate.
  • If a sentence ends with an abbreviation, the sentence count may treat it as multiple short sentences. This is normal for any simple counter.
  • Numbers, hyphenated words, and URLs are all counted as words.

Privacy and data handling

Everything happens in your browser using JavaScript. The text you paste is not sent to a server, not stored in a database, and not used for any analytics. You do not need to create an account, log in, or accept any extra tracking to use the counter. If you close the tab, the text is gone.

Frequently asked questions

Is this word counter free?

Yes, completely free, with no limits, no signup, and no paywalled features.

Does the tool count characters without spaces?

The visible counter reports total characters including spaces. For a quick check without spaces, you can subtract the space count or remove spaces in a copy of the text.

Will the tool work for languages other than English?

It works for most space-separated languages including English, Hindi (Devanagari), Spanish, French, German, and similar scripts. Languages that do not separate words with spaces, such as Chinese or Japanese, will not produce reliable word counts in any simple counter.

Why does my count look slightly different on another tool?

Different word counters use slightly different rules for handling hyphens, URLs, and abbreviations. The differences are usually small. As long as you stick to one tool while editing, the counts will be internally consistent.
